Chapter Twelve

Owen said we cain't eat supper with the Teller family no more. The words her brother had growled at her on their short break for a cold lunch had Rachel riled up into a righteous temper. Evening was falling and Rachel wanted nothing more than to rest. She didn't want supper, didn't want to wash up. Just sleep. But she hurried her stride, at a near run as she outpaced the wagon at the front of their caravan.

The wagon master had told them this morning that today would be a push. He wanted to make up some of the miles they'd lost over the last days slogging through rain and mud.

Fine. The sooner they reached the fort, the better.

But then had come Daniel’s grumble. Cain't eat supper with the Teller family.

Who was Owen Mason to tell them what they could and couldn't do?

For certain, he was one of the captains and thus, in charge of their company. Much to her distaste. But to refuse them the common decency to eat with one of the families that had befriended them?

It was infuriating.

She'd been stewing ever since Daniel had told her about it, and as the evening wore on, she'd decided to confront the captain.

Unfortunately, he'd been riding out in front of the wagon train for most of the day. Now he was in her sights, his horse slowing. Surely, they were almost finished with today's travel.

She'd started the morning riding out early on a borrowed horse with a quiet August beside her. They'd intended to go hunting, hopefully find a deer or turkey. Instead, they'd found the plain littered with buffalo as far as the eye could see. August had insisted on riding back to the company as fast as possible. Whatever he'd said to Hollis, the wagon master had blown the bugle before anyone was ready to pull up stakes for the day.

Why couldn't Owen be more like his brother? Kind, patient, compassionate. As far as she'd witnessed, Owen had none of those qualities.

"I need to talk to you!" she called out.

Owen gave one glance over his shoulder, then looked forward again.

She was within shouting distance. "I know you heard me."

Between her hurried steps and her shouts after him, she was out of breath. Not to mention the baby seemed to steal the very oxygen out of her lungs. She put one hand beneath her belly as she pushed herself to a near-run for a few more steps. "Owen Mason!”

She saw him glance heavenward as he wheeled his horse and approached, slowing to a walk. As she opened her mouth to demand an explanation, his brows crinkled and he held out a hand to stop her.

The nerve of the man!

Her temper boiled higher—

But then a strange noise registered. Like the rumble of far-off thunder. But the sky was clear and cloudless, the sun throwing colors as it set ahead of them.

Owen was staring behind and to the north. A look of horror dawned on his expression.

She whirled to see—

And
